REQUEST: Historic landmark designation
PROPOSED LAND USE: Personal residence
RECOMMENDATION
Recommend approval of landmark designation for Howlett Farm based on the following f'mdings:
A. This is a distinguished building of high architectural quality and historic interest; and
B. This designation will cause no significant adverse effect on the future development
of the County.
The designated property shall be as follows:
The Howlett Farm structure as located at Tax ID 752-615 Part of 6107 (Sheet 43).
BACKGROUND
The original tract of land for this structure was part of a land grant (+ 2000 acres) from King George
of England. The house known as Howlett Farm was built around 1820 with pr'unary additions added
around 1840-1850 by a Dr. Howlett. This property has a colorful history during the Civil War as
evidenced by letters previously in the possession of Baxter Perkinson. These letter were destroyed
in the flood of Hurricane Floyd in September 1999. The interior of the house has most of the original
interior intact including woodwork, doors, wainscoting, door locks, floor'mg, structural beams,
fireplace mantels and chimneys.

Joint Preservation and Planning Commission Meeting (2/15/00)
There was no opposition present.
On motion of Mr. Daniels, seconded by Mr. Morris, the Preservation Committee
resolved to recommend approval of historic landmark designation for Case
00HP0175, Howlett Farm.
AYES: Mrs. Howe and Messrs. Daniels, Walker, Morris, Cogbill.
ABSENT: Messrs. Wallace and Woolfolk.
On motion of Mr. Marsh, seconded by Mr. Cunningham, the Planning Commission
resolved to recommend approval of historic landmark designation for Case
00HP0175, Howlett Farm.
AYES: Unanimous.
The Board of Supervisors, on Wednesday, February 23, 2000, beginning at 7:00 p.m., will take under
consideration this request.
