Providing a FIRST CHOICE Community Through Excellence in Public Service.
The designated property shall be as follows:
The property known as Tax ID 790-654-0759 (Sheet 26) and the Shirley Seminary
structure located on the property.
BACKGROUND
The property known as Shirley Senfinary was probably built in the third quarter of the nineteenth
century. The original site of Shirley Seminary was about 200 feet northeast of where it stands
today. It served in the 1870s as one of two buildings housing Shirley Seminary, a female boarding
school. Shirley Seminary is also known as the Trueheart House because it was purchased in the
1920s by W.C. Truehart. The house is a two story frame dwelling with a central passage plan and
low pitched hipped roof. The original Greek Revival exterior detailing includes ramped window
lintels, a central second floor window with narrow sidelights matching those of the front entry and
wide comer boards in the form of rudimentary pilasters. The central dormer and the front porch
are early twentieth century additions.
