Grymes House
Dale Magisterial. District
This property is located at 4540 Centralia Road; fronting the
north line of Centralia Road, approximately 580 feet east of
Hopkins Road.
BACKGROUND:
The dwelling was constructed by Peyton Grymes in 1904 on a three
(3) acre parcel of land purchased from W.T. Moulton. In 1918, he
conveyed the property to E.D. Sullivan, who in turn sold it four
(4) years later to W.S. Jenks. The Jenks family continued to
live there until the mid-1960's.
The house is a frame, one-story dwelling with novelty siding.
The house was built on brick piers infilled later with brick.
There are interior stove flues. The home has the original
wrap-around veranda with turned posts. Most of the original
detailing is said to remain. There was a gable-roofed building
or extension at rear, connected to the main dwelling by hyphen,
which was possibly the original kitchen or servant's quarters.
There have been no significant alterations to the house.
The property was purchased in 1975 by Carl J. and Frances R.
Doucette.

ADDENDUM

Grymes House
Dale Magisterial District
During discussion of this request with the Planning Commission
and Preservation Committee, it was noted. that the Central Area
Plan envisioned extending Hopkins. Road in this area. The Commis-
sion and Committee recommended a condition be imposed on this
request, if approved by the Board, to assure that historic desig-
nation of this property did not preclude this future road project
and that the road project was designed to be as compatible as
practical with this historic community. Staff recommends that
the condition on page 2 of the "Request Analysis and Recommenda-
tion" be replaced with. the following condition to more clearly
address this matter:
CONDITION
This designation shall not apply to any property required
for the planned relocation of Hopkins Road or the planned
widening of Centralia Road.
