Anne Coohrane, Acting Executive Assistant to the County Administrator, led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States c~ America. 4. ~UB~IC ~t~ARING TO CONSIDER APPLIC3tNTS ~0R ~0~NT~T AS MIDLOT~IAN DISTRICT 8CH00L ~OAP~3 I~EPRESENTATtVE Mr. Currin stated this date and tLmu had been advertised for a public hearing to consider candidates who wish to be considered for appointment to the School ~o~xd from the Midlothlan ~gis~erial Dis~rict and to accept public tegument regarding th~ ~ualification~ of those persons. He outlined the criteria required for those individuals ~eeklng the appointment and requested an~ candidates wishing to be considered to sign in and explained the procedure by which each can~idat~ would b~ called to present himself/herself. Mr. Sullivan stated he was pleased to see the number of individuals from =he bis~rie~ ~hat had indicated their de,ire to be the Midlethian District School Board representative; that the position was an important, time-consuming one and selection of the nominee for that position was, in his opinion, the most primary priority; that hs intended to ~ake himself available to discuss issues with each candidate and any individuals wishing to provide him with insight regarding the qualifications of the III, Mr. Bill Harris, M~. ~hyllis Hussey, Mr. Raymond D. Mr. Edward ~. Willey, Jr. and Ms. Marjcry Wil!i~ if he/she were candidate responded in the affirmative. 90-3~4 3/29/90 Mr. Timothy ~rown formally declared himself a candidate for the Midlothian District School Board for the period of July 1, 1990 through JuRe 30, 1994. He outlined his educaticmal background, qualifications and experienc~ and presented the Board wi%h Me. Bonnie Chase, ME. Nancy Adams, Ms. Erie Jones, and Mr. Larry Ad~ms voloed ~upport for the appointment of Mr. Timothy Brown to the Che~t=rfield County School Board for the Midlothian District as they ~e!t his credentials clearly revealed his to bu welt-prepared to lend a unique service to the citizenry of tho County, that he is an enlightened, COnCerned parent with a demonstrated inter~t in ~h~ educational welfare o~ young people, and that hi~ educational background, experience and knowledge will be an invaluable asset %o the County. Mr, Tom ~cCabe, Ms. Sydney Backer and Ms. ~ynn Burgess voiced eupport for tho appointment of Mr. Charles ~. ~Ilis, III to the Chesterfield County School Board for the Mid!othian District as they felt his ability to work with the public on a personal and professional basis, knowledge of the ~ull expanse of the schools, first-hand knowledge an~ experience in the public school system in conjunction w~th Parent Teacher Organlzat~ens and his sincere commitment to educational ~xcellenc~ qualified him fur the position. Mr. Craig Hobson, Ms. Janet Alley, Mr. Jim Henricks, Mr. Bill Gragg, Mr. Tom ~iller, Ms. Lynn Cooper, Mr. Ray Cash and Gab Bobertson voiced eupport fur ~he appointment of ~s. Phyllie Hussey to the Chesterfield County School Board for the M£dlo%hian District as they felt her commitment to human values and the welfare of children~ her integrity and tireless efforts ~ow~r~ betterment of the school System qualified her as the best candidate. Approximately twenty-fiv~ person~ ~%ood to indicate their eupport o~ ~e. Huosey. Currin closed the public comnen%. Mr. Raymond D. Patterson formally declared himself a candidate for th~ Midl~thian District School Hoard for the period of ~u~y 1, 1990 ~hrough June 30, 1994. He presented information relative te his educational background, qualifications and experience. mr. James C. Gaskins, Jr. voiced support for Mr. Patterson as he felt that Mr. Patterson's educatlonal and professional experience would enable hL~ to deal with beth financial and planning challenges that will need to be oonfren=ed in the upcoming years. There being no one else to speak on behalf of Mr. Patterson, ~r. Michael Spinel!i formally declared hlmsel~ a candidate for the Midlothian District School BOard for the period of July I, 1990 through June 30, 1994. He presented information relative to his educational background, qualifications and experience. ~r. Douglas ~mith, and Mr. Dennis O'To©le voiced Support for Mr. Sp~nell~ as they felt h~m to be an individual of high integrity, a good communicator, and his commitment to educational well being of children qualified him for the po~ition. Currin closed the public comment. ~r. Allen R. W~aver formally declared himsel~ a candidate for the Midlothian District ~chool Hoard for th~ period of July l, 1990 through June 30, 1994. Mr. Edward E. Willey, Jr. formally daolars~ himself a candidate for the Midlothien District School Board for the period of July 1, 1990 through June 30, 1994. Marie Strack voiced support for ~r. Willey a~ they felt him to be a good negotiator, communioa- tor~ a goo~ listener, compromi~e~ and a problem solver and an individual active in church and community activities interested in the integrity and pro~res~ivene~ of the School System and the County. Ms. Donovan also voiced support on behalf of Ms. Carolyn ~ow~rs, who was called out of ~own, fo~ ~r. Will~y. When asked, approximately seven persen~ stood to indicate Support for ~r. Will~y. Mrs. Marjory Willis formally declared herself a candidate for the Midlothian District School Bourd for the period of July 1, I990 through June 30, 1994. She presented information relative to her educational back,round, qualifications and experience_ Mr. Hugh Stella~d, Mr. Joe Ward, M~. Trudy Cox, ~r. Reid $chweickert, Mr. Dick Watson, and Mr. Jim Willis voiced suppor~ 90-3Q6 3/29/90 fe~ Mrs. Willi~ as they felt she was an i~DQvative, inspiring, dedicated teacher concerned with the welt being and ~ducational future of all her students; an individual interested and committed to any task she accepted, totally ~ommttted to the County ~nd the ed~cabional ~ystem; an active member in many church and community activities and am individual of impeccable integrity who would be a valuable asset to the S~hosl Board. When asked, approximately forty per~ons stood in support of Mrs. Willis. It was generally agreed to recess for five (5] minutes. A question and answer session followed ~he preeen~ation of ~he candidates and public comments, (It i~ noted Mr. Wea~r wa~ not p~esent during this portion of the meeting.) There being no further candidates to announce ~heir candidacy, the public hearing was closed. The Board stated they felt the Charter by which this process was established was very timely an~ provided the opportunity for thos~ from ~he District who wished to do so to participate in the process; expressed appreciation for the participation of tho*~ pre~nt, both candldutes and supporters and indicated they would bs available for meetings to further discuss matters with the onndidate~; indicated they were pleased to see the number of individuals from the District that had indicated their desire to be the Midlothian District School Board representative and tho~e person~ present in support of th~ and that selection of the nominee for that po~ition wa~ a most important ta~k~ and offered thei~ assi$%aD~e to t~e candidate~ as they proceed through the proce~s~ On motion of ~. ~ullivan, seconded by ~r. Daniel, ~he Board adjourned at I1:30 p.m. (EST} until April 3, 1990, at 5:00 p.m. I~ST), in the Administration ~uilding Conference (RoOm 502).
