Sullivan had recently ~dergone s~rge~ a~d wo~ld not be able to attend the meeting and that ~. Mayes would arriv~ ~h~rtly. ~e fu~er stated ~is date and time had been advertised for a public h~aring for candldate~ to anno~ce their wish to be oonsidere~ for appointment to ~e school Board f~om the Be~uda ~ugimterial District and to accept public co~ent ~egar~in~ ~h~ir qualification6. He statud the public 'he~ring process for School Boar~ representatives is in accordance with Chesterfield County Charter as approved by Co~ty votern 19~5, a~u~ed by the General Assembly in 1987, and which became effective January 1, 19S~; that the Board planned to s~multaneously nominate/appoint the candidate at the May 1991 re~larly scheduled m~t~n~; a~4 outlined the criteria for those individuals seeking ~e appointment and ~eque~ted candidate~ wishing to ~ ecn~ider~d to sign in and th~ procedure by which each oandldate would be called pre,ant himself/herself. The Clerk indicate~ that four individuals, ~. Harebell Tra~ell, ~. Thomas A. Miller, Dr. Myrna Cop~land, and Kathy Goyne, had signed th= sheet indicating their desire to ~v~ a~ ~ B~rmuda District representative %o the School Board. Mr. Currin stated =hat any person not present and identified at ~is meeting ~y not be ~on~idere~ for appointment and in, ired if there was anyone else present who wished to si~ up at ~is poin~ in time for consideration, No one came forward, and Mr. Currln indicated only four persons would be considered for a~pointment as t/~e school Board representative. Mr, Marshall Trammell came forward and stated he wac se~king appoi~t2~snt to the S~heol Board from ~e B~uda Magisterial District. ~. Th~a~ A. Mayas arrived at the ~, Rober~ ca~ada, Rs. L~6 Dorman, Mr. Mike Lyk~ns~ Harold Sheppard, and Dr- ~rvin Larson voiced support for the appointment of ~. Tra~ell to ~e Chesterfield Co~=y Hoard for Be~uda District as they felt his ~ulifications/e~ri~nc= in tAe budget field qualified him for ~a ~osi=ion; t~a= he ~as knowledge of the legi~lativ~ process; that he has good organlzatlona] ~kills; ~ut he actively involve~ in School ~oard issues and =O~u~i~ activities; that he possess qualities necessary such decisive leadership; that he has a child in ~e School System; ~at he would solicit active participation from the It wa~ noted ~at an additional five citizen~ ~tood to voice suppor~ of ~r. Mr. Thomas HiLler formally declared himself a candidate for appointment to the School Board from the Bermuda Magisterial Dis~rict and submitted his resume to the Board. ~e outlined his qualifioatieno/experisnce and stated he wished to be appointed because he felt that the parents needed to be more involved; that the budget needed to be more thoroughly add. eased; and that ha had the capability to make good decisions and to commit himself to what would be in the heot interest of the educational system. Ms, Barbara ~¢Hugh, ~s. Mary Pritchard, ~lr. wilson H~i~ael, Ms. Mellnda B~nette~ and Mr. Daniel Smith voiced suppo~ for ~m appointment o~ ~. Killer to the ChesterZield County School Board for B~muda District as they felt he ha~ ~e leadership, cool.ant, and ~edi=atlon necessary ~o fill ~e posit~on; that he i~ i~volved with the School System and had participated extensively in the 1988 Bond Referendum; is an active pal~ticiDant in othe~ comnunity related actXvitie~; that knowledge of the budget proc~mm; that he has the skills innovative ideas; that he pos~esse~ gQOd communication skills; network of supporters. in support of Mr. Hiller. She outlined her qualifioation~/e~perienoe and ~tated she wished to bs a~ointed because ~he felt a desire to take part in the leadermh~p of the $¢hool ~ystem; would like to maintain the educational ~y~tem to it~ highest quality; and would like to ~s. Wanda williamson, Ms. Kay Matheny, ~s. Carol Adams~ Mr. Jim Dyson, and Mr. Phil Cunningham ~oiced support for the appointment of ~s. Goyme to the chea~erfield County Soho01 Board for Bermuda District as they felt that eke is well respected in the community; that ~he is a fair and o~en-minded individual; that she is dedicated, committed, and objective; that she 9os~ess a concern fo~ all the children; that she has integrity and the determination n~ede~ to get the job done; that she has prattled1 experience and first-hand knowledge; and that ~he has the =i~ n~cessary to ~o the job; that she has been a l~fe-long resident of the Chester area; that eke has children in the School System; and =hat she is actively involved in the School Syztem and eths~ community related activities. Reconvening: A que~tlon and answer session followed the presort=etlon of the candidates and public ¢omment~. 5~r. Currln inquired again if any other per, on was interested ~n announcing their candidacy. There being no other ~amdi~ate$ to anno~ce their candidacy, the publlc hearing was closed. The Board expressed aDDreciation for all those who participated in the process, bott~ candidates and supporters; o%u~ad all the candidates were outstanding choices and any one of them would ~e a valuable asset to the School System; and indicated th=y would bo s~heduling matte~ with the candidate~.
