Dr. Harold Brexton who gave the 3_ FLeDgE OF i~LLEGIANCE TO '£n~ FLAG OF '~'n~ U~I~'~ STATE~ OF Mr. Daniel led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag Of United States of kmerica. the 4. Daniel stated this dat~ and tim~ ha~ b~n adverti~e~ for a public hemrlng for candidates to announce their desire to be ~atoaca Magisterial District and to accept public co~ent regarding their qualifications. H~ fur~er stated the public bearing proc~sn for ~chooI Roard representatives was tn aooordance with the ~esterfield County Charter a~ approved by County voter~ in 19~6, adopted by ~e General Asse~ly in 1987, and ~hich became effective Janua~ 1, 1988. He ~tated ~. Colbert would be nominating a~ least one reDresentati~ ~r. Colber~ stated he was proud to be a part of ~he process and expressed appreciation to the c~ndidates for their interest in representing Matoaoa District on the school Board. Mr. Daniel outlined the criteria for those individuals seeking the appointment, requested candidates wishing to be considered to ~ign in, ~nd explained the procedure by which each candidate would be called to present himself/herself. When asked, the Glerk indicated three individuals, Dr. Harry A. ~ohnson, Dr. William M. Clayborne an~ ~r~. Jooelyn Barnwell had signed the sheet indicating their desire to serve as the Matoaca District representative tO the SQhOOl Hoard. Mr. Daniel stated any person not present and identified at this meetinq may not be Considered for appointment and inqulrsd if there was anyone else present who wi~he~ to sign up for Consideration. No one came forward and ~r, Daniel indicated only three persons would be considered for appointment at this time a~ th~ Sohoo~ ~oard representative for thc Matoaca Magisterial District. Krs. Jacelyn Barnwell came forward and stated she was ~king appointment to the ~ehool Board from the ~atcaca Magisterial District. Dr. Barry A. Johnson cane forward and stated he was Seeking appointment to the School Board from the Matoaca Magisterial Dr. William ~. Clayborne came forward and stated he was seeking appointment to the school Board from the Mateaea ~agisteriaI Diatrict. ~2~. Daniel stated each candidate WOUld be allowed a twenhy minute presentation which would include amy of their mupporter~' comments. Dr. Hmrry A. Johnmon formally declared himself a candidate for appointment to the School Beard from the Matea~a Magisterial District and submitted his resume to the Moard. He outlined his education, qualifications and e~erienoe and stated he wished to be considered for the ~ppolntment as he ~alt his education and experience could contribute to the educational mystem and that he enjoyed working in the field of education amd w~th children. Dr. William A. Clayborne formally declared himself a candidate for appointmen~ to the School Board from the Matoaoa Magisterial Dimtrict and submitted his resume to the Board. ~e outlined his education, guallflcatione and experience and stated he wished to be conmidmred for the appointment as ha felt his experience in the educational field would enhance the School System. Mrs. Jeoely~ Bothwell formally ~eclered herself a candidate for appointment to the School Board from the Matoucu Ma~imterial District and submitted her re=LL~e to the ~oard. She outlined her e~u~a=iun! qualifications and experience and stated she wished to be considered for the appointment as she felt the County needed a broad-based, innovative ~ducational system with emphasis on accentuating ~he individual's talents and that she would he cora~itted to makin~ decisions in the bemt interest of the children. Dr. Harold Draxton! ~resldent of the Civic and Progressive Aokion Association of the Matoaca Magisterial Dimtriet, and Lawrence D. 9ellard, President of the chem~erfield Branch of the NAACPz voiced support for t~ appointment of M-rs. Jooelyn Barnw~ll to the Chesterfield county SohooI Hoard reprementing Matcaca Magisterial District am they felt she had the educati~n, qualifications and experience necessary to fill the position; that she wa~ e long-time resident of County and had a broad under~andlng Of the educational need~ of the residents; that ~ome of her children had qraduated from the 92-333 4/29/92 perspective f~r improvement within the System; that she was community minded, personabler accessible and committed to the belies that a quality education was an sntitlemen= of every child. F~r. Pollard read into the record a letter addressed to Mr. ~olbert outlining the NAACP'S endorsement of Mrs. Barnw~ll. A qne~t~oD and answer $~$$ion followed the presentation of %he candidates and public eomnent~. Mr. Daniel expressed appreciation for all t/%o~e ~ho participate~ in the process, both candidates and supporters, and indicated all of ~he candidates were outstanding choices and any one of them would be a valuable asse~ to the School system. He inquired again if any otHe~ person was interested in announcing their candidacy. T~ere being no one else to annuunce their candidacy, t~e public hearing wa~ olo~ed. Ntt. Daniel stated the nomination would be considered at ~_he May 13, 1992 or May 27, 1992 meeting. He indicated the Board would schedule meetings, if desired by the candidates, to further discuss matter~ with them.
