Lawrence T, ~elly declared himself a 'candidate for appointment to the School Board from the Clover Hill ~agisterial Dis~rict and submitts~ his resume to the Board. He outlined his education, qualifications, and experience and stated he wished to be oensldered for the appointment as he was concerned about the quality of education in County Schools. He further stated hie primary ~nteres~ was.to provide the best learning environnent for the citizen~ Of the next century. Mr. Michael' D. Mark= declared himself a candidate for appointment to the School Board from the Clover Hill Magisterial District and submitted his resume un~ two lette~re of reco~mendatlcn tc the Board. He outlined his education, q~alifi=atlons, and experience and stated he wished to be ~on~idered for the appointment as he was concerned about the quality of education in County sehosl$ and he felt all children should receive the best =ducution possible. Mr. Tommy Hawkins declared himself a candidate for appointment tot he school ssard from the Clover ~ill Magisterial District and s%~bmitted his resume to the Hoard. He outllned education, qualifications, and eXperience and stated he wished to be considered for th~ appointment as he felt as a retired AT&T District Manager he would be dedicated to commit the time ~sst ex~erien=es has afforded him the O~ganizational, leadership, and financial skills that he ~eels are important for the position. Mr. Harry colestoc~; Ms. Krisanne Crosby; and Dr. Edgar Wallin voiced ~upport of F~. Hawkins. (It was nete~ Mr. Colestsok submitted into the record a letter ef r~commendatlon in of Mr. ~awkins.) Dr. Kenneth Baas declared himself a candi~a=s f~r appointment to the School Board from the Clover Mill Magisterial District ~nd submitted his resume to the Board, He outlined his education, qualifications, and experience and stated he wished to be considered for the appoinT~ent as he was concerned about the quality of education in th~ $¢hool ~ysten and his goal was to foster excellence in education. ~r. Joe Lange voiced support cf Dr. Haam. It was generally agreed to recess for five minutes. Reocnven~ng: F~r, Warren stated Mr. McHale was unable to be present at the meeting due to a previous work condiment and would be contacting the candidates for a personal, interview. A question and answer cession followed the price,ratine of the sandidates and publio comments. Mr. Warren expressed appreciation for all those who participated in the process, beth candidates and supporters, and indieate~ all of the candidates were outstanding choices. He stated the nomination would be considered at one of the ra~ularly scheduled Board meet~ng~ in May, ~993. He inquired again if any other per~o~ was interested in announcing their c~ndidacy. There being no one else to announce their candidacy, the public .hearing was clese~. Mr. Daniel exDressed appreciation to the candidates for their participation in the proce~ and stated he weuld be available to further discuss additional questions of interest with each indlvidual candidate aBd encouraged each candidate to make an appointment to meet with him. Mr. Uelbe~t and Mr. Barber expressed appreciation to both candidates and supporters for their participation in the ~, W~r~n inquired as to a SChOol Board policy prohibiting members ser~inq on the School Beard from being employed wi~hln the S~hoel System. ~r. Micas stated he felt the policy applied to all S~hsol employees. Mr. Warren ~tated Chesterfield County's aD_nual budget total~ apprexlmately$47D milllon a year and stated the School System re~eives approximately 51 ps, cent of the budget. He ~uxthez s~ated the F¥9~-94 ~ohool budget i~ approximately $245 million, which represents a 10 percent increase in fundinq from the County funds to ~he School ~y~t~m from PY92-93 budget and stated a portion of the increase was possible due to eZflclaneies ~eught within ~he system this year which resulted in a $~ million ~urplu~. ~e furthe~ ~tated h~ felt the Bea~d of Su~erv~sorm did a goe~ job in allocating the available resources to all departments without raising fee~ or taxes and noted 98 ps,cent of the Suhool~s requested budget was funded- On motion o£ Mr. Colbert, seconded by Mr. Barber, the Board adjourned at ll:lO p,m. until April 28, 1993 at 3:00 p.m. Aye~ : Mr, Warren, Mr. Barb~, ~.
