Mission Statement
The Chesterfield Historical Society of
Virginia serves as the center for
Chesterfield County history. Its purposes
are to collect, preserve, interpret, and
promote the county's unique past for the
education and enjoymem ofpresem and
future generations.
Chesterfield Firsts
1611- Citie of Henricus was
established, 2nd permanent city
· 1612- Tobacco first cultivated at
Bermuda Hundred
· 1614- Henrico selected as the first
college in America, but never
finished
· 1614- Bermuda Hundred was first
incorporated town in America
- 1619- Falling Creek was the first
Iron Furnace in the New World
1622- Mount Maladay. Near Dutch
Gap, was the first hospital in
America
1703- Coal discovered in
Midlothian, first mined in 1709
· 1803- Midlothian Turnpike became
first paved road in Virginia
· 1831- Midlothian to Manchester
Rail Road, the first in Virginia
· 1862- First U.S.M.C. Medal of
Honor won at Drewry's Bluff
· 1921- Father's Day was originated
by three Chesterfield ladies

· Open more than 40 hours per week by
skilled volunteers and staff

supporting Virginia's Standards of Learning
The museum was designed to
replicate the 1750 Courthouse
Country Store Exhibit
Chesterfield County
Museum plays its role
in educating and
entertaining county
youth
The 1917
Courthouse is
currently being used
by the Chesterfield
Court system.
It is hoped that it can
be added to the
Historical Society
sites again.
1892 Jail
The 1892 Jail, the third
of five jail sites in
Chesterfield County,
houses exhibits and
artifacts of both the
Police and Fire
Departments as well as
the cells located on the
second floor.
Part of the tour of
the 1892 Jail is grim
visit to the old cells
and a look at former
living conditions.

Society Goals
· Develop school tours complimenting the SOLs
· Provide community service activities for high school
students
· Providing tours to compliment their requirements
· Partner with business, retailers, and organizations to
promote visitation to Chesterfield County and the Society
· Create more awareness of what Historical Society offers to
support economic development
· Work with County and Heritage Alliance in promoting
historic info and sites in preparation for 2007
