Board of Supervisors of Chesterfield
County, held at the Courthouse on
June 18, 1957, at 8:00 p.m.
Present:

On motion of Mr. Hague, seconded by ~r. Driskill, it is resolved that this
grant a variance to Mr.J.V.Glaspie to allow the construction of a house on
a private right of way, leading eaBtwardly from Rt. 10 approximately 1/2 mile
south of Frosty's Corner, provided Mr. Glaspie states in writing that he will
no~ make any demands on the County for road im~ovements.
On motion of ~r.Britton, seconded by Mr. Goyne, it is resolved that this Board,
on the advice of the Consulting Engineers, award Contract B-1 for the construct ~n
of certain tank bases and other miscellaneous structures to R.B.Ritchie Company~
for the sum of $98,675.00.
And be it further resolved, that the award for the erection of four (4) tanks
be awarded to the Chicago Bridge and Iron Company for the sum of $230,600.00.
On motion of Mr.Britton, seconded by ~v~r. Hague, it is resolved that this Board
accept the signed easements presented on the Reams Road, and designate same
a~ a public right of way.
On motion of Mr. Hagerman, seconded by Mr.Goyne, it is resolved that this Board
request the Highway Department to improve a road leading southwest from
~erndale Avenue in Matoaca to the old Mill property at a price not to exceed
$&50.OO, said cost to be paid from the 3¢ Road Fund of the County.
On motion of Mr. Driskill, seconded by R~r. Goyne, it is resolved that the
Executive Secretary be and he hereby is requested to ask Judge H.B. Gilliam,
to proceed as soon as possible to sell the land listed under Sarah Woodson for
delinquent taxes.
This day it was cited that the Finance Board of the County had recommended
that the Treasurer of the County be authorized to invest County funds in
treasury bills. Upon consideration whereof, and on motion of Mr. Hagerman,
seconded by ~4r. Britton, it is resolved that the Treasurer of the County be
and he hereby is authorized to invest such ~oney as is available up to
$2,500,000 in treasury bills.
On motion ofMr. Driskill, eeconded by Mr. Britton, it is resolved that the
Executive Secretary be and he hereby is authorized to purchase one (1) air-
conditioner for the office of the County Court Clerk, and to investigate the
cost of air-conditioners for other offices at the Court House.
The Executive Secretary read a letter from the ~iiddlesex County School Board
concerning its dilmmma in financing schools, which letter is filed with the
Board's papers.
A letter from the Supt. of Schools, Mr. Fred Thompson, requesting $52,794.18
was presented, however, the Treasurer of the County stated that the County
School Board had received from the State enough money to pay the outstanding
bills represented by this amount.
A discussion on house numbers took place, and the County Engineer reported tha~
a preliminary report fromR.Stuart Royer & Associates on its progress on
house numbers in the County indicated that it would be necessary to have the
new tax map completed before an acceptance house number can be accomplished.
It was generally agreed that additional help in getting the tax maps completed
would be investigated.
This day Mr. Painter, County Engineer, presen~%d a recommendation on sewer
charges for the McGuire Circle area. Upon consideration whereof, and on
motion of Mr. Britton, seconded by Mr. Driskill, it is resolved that the
Commonwealth's Attorney, County Engineer, and the Executive Secretary be and
they hereby are requested to prepare an ordinance setting out the proposed
sewer rates.
On motion of Mr. Hagerman, seconded by b~.Britton, it is resolved that upon
recommendation of the Salary Committee,the salary of the secretary to the Couni
Engineer and the secretary to the Office Manager of the Water Department, be,
and they are hereby raised to $260.00 per month, beginning July 1, 1957.
And be it further resolved that the Salary Committee be requested to
study the salaries of Other County employees of clerical nature.
This day it was reported by ~ir. Painter that persons other than Water Department
employees were making unauthorized use of County fire hydrants. Upon
consideration whereof and on motion of ~r.Bri~ton, me~onded by Mr. Hagerman,
it is resolved that the County Engineer be and he hereby is authorized to write
a letter of instructions to the various volunteer fire departments.
On motion of~.Britton,seconded by Mr. Hagerman, it is resolved that this Board
adjourn until Monday, June 2&th, at 3:00 p.m.
