of December, 1949, showing exI~nses incurred in that office in %he amoun% of $1524.1~,
of which the County has paid two-thirds, or $1016.10, the remainder to be paid by th9
State, and the Board approving the report, the same is filed.
This day Mr. Geo. W. ~oore, Jr., Commissioner of Revenue, submitted his report to th~
Board for the month of December, 1949, showing expenses incurred in that office in
the amount of $~070.00, of which the County has paid two-thirds, or ~713.33, the
remainder to be paid by the State, and the Board approving the report, the same is
filed.
This day ~r. Marcus A. Cogbill, Co~nonwealth's Attorney, submitted his report to the
Board for the month of December, 1949, showing expenses incurred in that office in
the amount of ~,58.33, of which the County has paid one-half or ~229.16, the remaindSr
to be paid by the State, and the Board approving the report, the sa~ is l~iled.
This day ~r. O. B. Gates, Sheriff, submitted his report to the Board for the month
of ~ovember, 1949, showh~g expenses incurred in that office in the amount of ~886.81
of v~nich the County has paid one-third or ~!~2~)5.60, the remainder to be paid by the

This day the Executive Secretary read a letter from Mr. C. F. Kc!lam, Resi~!.ent
Engineer, Virginia Dept. of Highways, explaining the reason that the traffic surveys
on U. S. Rt. 1 and Rt. 616 and Snead Road had not been made. On motion, the lette[
is received and ordered to be filed.
This day the Executive Secretary read to the Board a letter from 5he Chase Construct[on
Company concerning Rodgers Avenue in the Ampthill Subdivision. Upon consideration

that the matter be continued for further hearing.
on motion of Irvin G. Homer, it is resolved that the representatives of this Countyi
in the State's Legislature be advised that it is the s~nse of this Board that it is
~roper and fit that legislation be had either empowering the Board of Supervisors to!
appoint the School Board, or to have the School Board members elected by popular vote,
and that in said legislation authority should be expressly given to the County I
Purchasing Agent to be the Pure,rasing Agent fur the School Board.
This day the Executive Secretary read to the Board a letter from ~r. Jos. ~'~. Hatchett,
City Manager of the City of Petersburg, in reference to the rate of Board of prisoners
in the City of Petersburg's jail. And it appears that the rate has been increase~
beyond reason and upon c~,nsideration thereof and on motion of ~.~r. P. W. Covington, i'
is resolved that the Sheriff of the County of Chesterfield and the Police Offfcers
of the County of Chesterfield be directed not to place any more prisoners in the
Petersburg Jail.
And be it further resolved, that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Chief~
of Police of Chesterfield County and to the Sheriff of said County.
This day the Executive Secretary read to the Board a letter dated Jan. 5, 1950, from
the Davenport Insurance Corporation, concerning an insurance policy on the office
building here at Chesterfield Courthouse. Upon consideration ~]ereof, and it
apda,earing that the sum of ~5,000.00 which is now upon this building, is insufficient
on motion of ~4r. H. T. Goyne, it is resolved that insurance in the amount of ~10,000 O0
be placed upon this building, and that the said insurance be placed with Mr. Leo
~yers, Agt. of the Farm Bureau Mutual Insurauuce Company, if his rates are the same
or less than that reported by the Davenport Insurance Company. And be it further
resolved, that Nr. Myers be requested to place a binder upon this insurance on this
building until the next meeting of this Board and submit his rate.
This day again the matter of the installation of equipment and the purchase of gas
for the County garage at the Courthouse came before the Board. Upon consideration
Whereof, and on motion of H. T. Goyne, it is resolved that this Board acquire and
have installed the necessary equipment for the garage and that the Board purchase th~
gas and oil for the use in the County equipment at such place and fr~n such persons
or corporations giving the most advantageous price.
This day the matter of compensation of George Baskerville, one of the drivers of the
trash trucks in the County, came before the Board, and upon consideration whereof~
and on motion, it is resolved that beginning February 1, 1950 the salary ~or said
George Baske ville be ~140.O0 per month.
This day the Executive. Secretary presented to the Board a statement ~rom W. S. Darle~
& Company, of Chicago, Ill. showing that this Board had not paid for purchases from
said Company made on January 14, 1949, such as, tear gas grenades, tear gas projector?s,
belts, bolsters, cartridge carriers, and fire extinguishers, and five 5" barrell
guns, amounting in the aggregate to $951.85, and ~hereas mt appears that this equi~m.~nt
was purchased by W. H. Caldwell, former Executive Secretary and Chief of Police,
Chas.A.Ryburn, Jr., in January, 1949, and that the sane is a proper claim for this
iBoard to pay. Upon consideration whereof~ and on motion~ it is resolved that
ithe said claim of W. S. Darley of Chicago, Ill. for ;ii951.85 be and the same is hereby
i ordered to be paid.

whereof, and on motion, it is resolved that the Executive Secretary be and he hereby
is authorized and empowered to confer with ,.m. Kuhl concerning the purchase of
equipment and to ?urchase the equipment that the Executive Secretary deems necessary
for the fire truck.

Board, and the Executive Secretary presented to the Board a survey by W. W. LaPrade
,& Bros., County S~'veyors, showing Parcel #1 and Parcel //2 on the plan. Upon
consideration whereof, and on motion, of l~[r. H. T. Goyne, it is resolved that this
Board purchase from W. H. Caldwell and wife, Parcel //1, of 10.38 acres shown on the
Plat aforesaid dated Jan. 6, 1950, at the agreed price of ~7500.O0 and incidental
costs in obtaining the title to the land. And be it fm-ther resolved that the
Commonwealth's Attorney look into the legality of the deed and the title to the land
and acquire tb~t am easement be granted over Parcel ~2 to Parcel i~l, so that .this
Board may have free access to said Parcel #I.

power company to set a definite date on which they can install the lights in Chesterfield

to advertise and receive applications for a Building Inspector, for Cheste'£ield
County, whose salary s~all be ~3000.00 plus mileage at 5¢ per mile. The beginning
