November-~1,-1989-P€&€P€ Beeember-13,-1989-BS January 10, 1990 BS REQUEST ANALYSIS AND RECOMMENDATION 89HP0426 Yellow House Bermuda Magisterial District This property is located on property fronting the south line of West Hundred Road and is better known as 3001 West Hundred Road. BACKGROUND Built in 1856, the house is a large-scale, two-story, frame, central-passage plan structure with an original two-story rear ell. Set on low foundations, with a basement under the ell, the house features a three-bay facade with oversized, floor-length windows and a very low pitched roof with projecting eaves. The present distyle front porch replaces a longer original porch that extended across the front of the house to the outside of the windows. Interior, as well as exterior, trim remains largely intact. The wide central passage contains a handsome curving openstring stair with turned walnut newel and baluster. The large rooms, with eleven (11) foot ceilings, contain plain Greek mantels and openings with heavily molded architrave surrounds. The nine (9) foot high six-over-six sash windows slide up into the wall, providing access to the veranda that formerly stretched across the front of the house. Henry A. Winfree, the builder of the house, played a major role in developing the town of Chester. When erected, the house stood on a 1,119 acre tract. In 1861-62, Winfree kept a small female boarding school at the house under the direction of a Mrs. Poindexter. The school disbanded in 1862 after a series of Federal raids in the area forced students to store their valuables in leather trunks hidden in the woods behind the house. On May 10, 1864, the house was at the center of hostilities during General B. F. Butler's advance on Richmond. By May 8, 18,000 Federal troops had been positioned in the immediate area, and the following day, a large contingent attempted to take the main railroad line at Chester Station, a mile west of Yellow House. RECOMMENDATION Planning staff recommends approval of landmark designation for Yellow House based on the following findings: 1.
